The Economic Development Department

Creating a diverse economic base in support of growing self-sufficiency for the Colony’s 900 members has been the principal focus of its economic development activities during the last five years. The redevelopment of Reno ’s East Second Street neighborhood, where half the Colony’s residents live, is another.

For over two decades the Colony assembled development sites in Reno and Washoe County , representing 80 acres of well-situated commercial property. Located in urban, suburban and high-growth areas this land has been acquired and improved for leasing to individuals and companies primarily for retail development. Auto dealerships, discount and “big box” centers and specialty shops are typical of the tenants the Colony seeks to attract to these sites. In addition, the Department carries out design and development services for community projects such as construction, now underway, of a 20 million dollar Tribal Health Center at Giroux Street on the Truckee River . Other community and regional facilities are in planning for construction in the next several years as well. In pursuing development plans the Colony seeks to partner with private businesses and with municipal, regional and state governments. One recent example of the latter partnerships is the Colony-funded installation on a new traffic signal system and roadway improvements, at the cost of $509,000 on South Virginia Street at McCabe Street . Other projects to assist our governmental partners in benefiting the public are in planning and design.

Federal & State Partners
The Colony's development program is assisted by various Federal incentives and agencies and by its compact with the State of Nevada covering the collection of sales, use and excise taxes by the Colony

Sites & Tenants
Each of the Colony's development sites are comprised of Federal land held in trust for Tribal benefit. They are available on a ground lease basis. The Colony manages four business development sites, is landlord to 20 commercial tenants and operates Five Indian Smoke Shops. For more information contact David E. Anderson, Director of Economic Development.
